Living a More Creative Life

I recently had the pleasure of attending a weekend workshop around the theme of living a creative life, whatever creativity means to you. Now I wouldn’t call myself artistic or musical in any way and I didn’t grow up learning to appreciate the arts anywhere near as much as I wish I had, but creativity can be a beautiful umbrella for moving through life with a greater sense of curiosity and the idea of that excites me.

During the workshop, we explored the concept of being present and being curious about life, giving permission to ourselves to make choices from a place of curiosity rather than a place of fear; from inquisitiveness rather than passion – essentially allowing oneself to choose the most interesting path to journey through life.

I know that these are not new concepts but so many of us are so busy keeping our hamster wheels in motion that we hardly know what day of the week it is. We regularly tell ourselves that we’re too busy: we use it as an excuse for friends, family and most importantly for ourselves. We’re so busy that we don’t notice what’s going on around us.

So, I invite you to take a moment and to give yourself permission to carve out some well-deserved ‘Me Time’. If you do, how would you choose to spend this precious time? For me personally, my meditation practice is a creative process and there are many other ways in which we can all choose to embrace our creative spirit.

Would you choose to be out in nature, to find a comfy spot to sit, relax and read a good book? Perhaps you’d make the time to journal, or is there a hobby that you have been meaning to try? Or maybe it is to join a book club, or to meet a friend for a coffee. There are so many possibilities, and it is different for each and every one of us. One of my absolute pleasures in life is my regular Pilates practice – I’m fitter in my sixties than I ever was in my forties – and yes, it is partly due to the luxury of time, but also because I believe that it is an integral part of my general well-being.

You may be aware that I used to be a primary school teacher, and the idea of living a more creative life, of living a life from a place of curiosity reminded me of the joy I used to feel working with the children in my care because they almost always work from a place of curiosity. What if Earth is a school for souls? Let’s take the ride and ask ourselves, “How do I feel towards myself?” rather than “How do I feel about myself?” Many of us, myself included, have allowed fear to be in the driving seat but what if you now choose to look through a different lens, and allow yourself to take a different approach to the coming days, months and years?

One of the things that I now want to make some time for is immersing myself in Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way – a book that outlines a course in discovering and recovering your creative self. On the cover of the book it says that it is ‘a spiritual path to higher creativity’ – what more could a girl like me want? The time to fully immerse myself and embrace the process!

Another new concept introduced to me through the workshop was the idea of exploring ‘enchantment’. It is a word that conjures a sense of the ethereal for me so I’m taking my time to feel into it. I often talk about feeling excited and of feeling a great sense of joy, but enchantment is new to me and I am a work in progress.

You are meant to be here to live your best life; you are here to be the tall poppy, to be seen and heard, to be valued and loved. At the end of this beautiful workshop we were guided to go through our notes and underline words and phrases that jumped out at us from the page. We then had to choose the top ten and were guided to write a poem using some of these words. I am no poet but I’m happy to share with you my summary of an enchanting weekend spent with so many beautiful like-minded souls, exploring the possibility of living a more creative life. Mine is titled ‘Lighten Up’:

Lighten Up

Connection to Source enables you to shine your light.
It is from here that you weave your magic.
Stay curious and step into your own enlightenment.

So I invite you to take some time out of your busy schedule for yourself. Explore your concept of ‘Me Time’ and give yourself permission for it to be what you choose it to be. Give yourself permission to be, rather than to do. You have one life, make it the very best life you can and do it for you because we will all benefit from you being happier, healthier and more creative and curious. There is a miracle waiting for you on the other side of your own curiosity. There is a miracle waiting for you within your creativity. Be brave, be bold and live life through a new lens. Above all – enjoy!

Please do let me know how you choose to embrace your creativity and your curiosity and how it unfolds for you.
